How to use the Multiple Pay Rates Calculator

  1. Provide hours and hourly rate for each pay-rate group using one consistent planning period.
  2. Confirm that each hour appears in one rate group only.
  3. Calculate the result to combine earnings and calculate a weighted average hourly rate.
  4. When reviewing the output, watch for entering the same hours under both a base rate and a premium rate.

What this calculator does

Combine several groups of hours paid at different hourly rates. Only the values entered on the page are used to combine earnings and calculate a weighted average hourly rate.

The pay result is a gross mathematical estimate based only on the entered rates, hours and multipliers. It does not calculate withholding, benefits, deductions or every payroll rule.

Total pay = sum of hours at each rate. Weighted rate = total pay divided by total hours.

Do not assign the same hour to two rate groups

The tool adds earnings from separate hour-and-rate pairs. Each worked hour should normally appear in only the rate group intended for it. If a premium is paid on top of base pay rather than instead of base pay, model that policy carefully so the same hour is not double-counted unintentionally.

Calculation example

Example input: 40 hours at $25 and 5 hours at $37.50

Example result: $1,187.50 gross pay and $26.39 weighted average rate.

For a real record, replace every sample value with your own data and verify that each hour appears in one rate group only.

How to interpret the result

Pay entitlements vary by jurisdiction, contract, classification and employer policy. Adjust the inputs to match the rules that actually apply.

In particular, confirm that each hour appears in one rate group only and avoid entering the same hours under both a base rate and a premium rate.

Practical checks before using the result

  • Verify the key assumption: that each hour appears in one rate group only.
  • Avoid a common error: entering the same hours under both a base rate and a premium rate.
