Split Shift Calculator
Combine up to three separate work periods without counting the gaps between them.
How to use the Split Shift Calculator
- Start with each separate session start, end and break.
- Make sure you have checked that every session is entered once and does not overlap another session before accepting the defaults.
- Run the calculator to combine non-overlapping work sessions into one worked-time total.
- Before using the result elsewhere, rule out double-counting time that appears in two sessions.
What this calculator does
Combine up to three separate work periods without counting the gaps between them. Only the values entered on the page are used to combine non-overlapping work sessions into one worked-time total.
This calculator processes the entered time values in the browser and presents both a readable duration and, where relevant, a decimal-hour value. Keep source records such as approved punches or timesheets when the result will be used for payroll review.
Why separate sessions matter in a split shift
A split shift contains real gaps between work periods. Those gaps should not be counted as work unless the source record says otherwise. Entering each session separately also makes overlapping entries easier to spot before the daily total is used elsewhere.
Calculation example
Example input: 8:00 AM-12:00 PM and 2:00 PM-6:00 PM
Example result: 8h 00m total worked time.
Different values for each separate session start, end and break can produce a different answer, so confirm that every session is entered once and does not overlap another session first.
How to interpret the result
Time entries can cross midnight when the calculator supports an end time earlier than the start. Review breaks carefully and avoid entering the same unpaid period twice.
In particular, confirm that every session is entered once and does not overlap another session and avoid double-counting time that appears in two sessions.
Practical checks before using the result
- Verify the key assumption: that every session is entered once and does not overlap another session.
- Avoid a common error: double-counting time that appears in two sessions.
Calculation design and testing notes are documented in the Calculator Methodology and Accuracy Policy.
