  2. Enter the times requested for that calculation.

Calculate the length of a lunch break

Use the break duration option when you know when a break started and ended. The calculator measures the elapsed time between the two entries.

Break start: 12:15 PM

Break end: 12:45 PM

Break duration: 30 minutes

Break duration = break end time - break start time

Calculate when to return from lunch

Use the return time option when you know when the break begins and how long it is allowed to last.

Break start: 12:10 PM

Break length: 30 minutes

Return time: 12:40 PM

Subtract lunch from a work shift

Use the shift option to calculate paid work time after subtracting an unpaid meal break.

Shift start: 8:00 AM

Shift end: 5:00 PM

Unpaid lunch: 30 minutes

Gross shift: 9h 00m
Worked time: 8h 30m
Decimal worked hours: 8.50

Worked time = gross shift duration - unpaid break duration

Overnight breaks and shifts

When an end time is earlier than its start time, the calculator treats the end as occurring on the following day. This supports breaks and shifts that cross midnight.

Break start: 11:45 PM

Break end: 12:15 AM

Break duration: 30 minutes

Break length formats

For return-time and shift calculations, you may enter the break length as minutes or as hours and minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can the calculator find my lunch return time?
Yes. Choose Find return time, enter the break start and break length, then calculate.
Can I subtract lunch from an overnight shift?
Yes. A shift end earlier than the shift start is treated as the following day.
Can I enter 30 minutes as 0:30?
Yes. For break-length inputs, both 30 and 0:30 mean 30 minutes.
Does the tool decide whether a break should be paid?
No. The tool only performs the calculation you select. Break entitlement and whether a break is paid depend on applicable rules and workplace policy.
Why is the break required to be shorter than the shift?
An unpaid break equal to or longer than the full shift would leave no positive worked time and usually indicates an entry error.
Are my times saved?
No. The calculation happens in the browser, and entries are cleared when you reset the tool or leave the page.
